STOP LOOKING, START SEEING

Street photography isn’t about luck, expensive gear, or having ‘the eye’. It’s a skill you can learn.

This book teaches a clear, practical framework refined over 10 years of running street photography workshops.

No gear talk. No history lessons. Just creative, actionable techniques grounded in visual storytelling, graphic design principles, and the psychology of perception.

Draw inspiration from 88 photographs as you work through 8 progressive assignments designed to transform how you shoot:

  • Capture engaging candid moments by combining the right mindset with The Curiosity Principle
  • Compose instinctively by speaking the brain’s visual language and applying design fundamentals
  • Tell stronger stories with the Street as Theatre framework – from details to multi-layered scenes
  • Understand exactly what makes a great street photo work and how to make more of them

Whether you're new to street photography or refining your skills, Stop Looking, Start Seeing will teach you how to think and see differently, compose with intent, and come home with images you're proud of – again and again.

🚨 Side effects of reading this book and applying what you learn include:
No longer wandering around looking for photos and hoping for the best... you've started SEEING. You understand the elements of what makes a great street photograph work. You see opportunities everywhere because you have more ideas and inspiration than you can throw an SD card at. You shoot with intention and compose with ease. Your confidence skyrockets. And by practicing what you learn and working through the assignments, your photos get better and better. You start creating images you love and are proud to share!

"Everything is learnable"

This book proves it.

 WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK DIFFERENT?

Unlike most traditional photography books that focus on technical settings or sometimes vague artistic advice, Stop Looking, Start Seeing gives you a tried-and-tested, structured, assignment-based framework that builds your skills progressively. Each assignment is designed to train your observation, develop your compositional intuition, and teach you visual storytelling techniques that you can tackle in 'easy' or 'advanced' mode as you can use the assignments as standalone challenges or layer them on one another.

 WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR:

Beginners who want to skip years of trial and error and learn a proven framework from day one
Street photographers stuck in a creative rut, coming home with SD cards full of disappointment
Experienced photographers (including wedding and documentary shooters) who want to refine their candid photography skills
DoSP workshop participants looking for a comprehensive reference with exclusive bonus material not shared on in-person workshops
Anyone who's ever felt like there's more to street photography than pointing your camera at a scene and hoping for the best

WHO THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR:

Photographers who believe "you either have the eye or you don't" and think street photography can't be taught
Anyone looking for technical camera stuff such as settings, gear reviews, deep-dives, or the "best lens for street photography"
Those who believe street photography should only be spontaneous "real life as it is" without composition or storytelling
Photographers who prefer to rely on luck rather than applying principles from psychology and design for intentional seeing
Anyone unwilling to practice! This book requires you to actually go out and shoot the assignments, not just read and nod along

"Everything is learnable."

"Everybody takes a picture, but taking a picture is very different from making a photograph. A photograph is something that has an idea, that you give shape to, whereas a picture has no consciousness."

JOEL MEYEROWITZ

"To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them."

ELLIOT ERWITT
